  SHEET MUSIC 08     8595017420504     released 5/2015

new period music inspired by the Michna's famous baroque vocal collection (selection from the Czech Marian Music, 1647) composed in 2014 by Jaroslav Tůma (*1956)

sheet music for organ or another keyboard instrument – 76 pages, A4 wide

Even though organ playing is at Michna’s time and earlier, richly documented, there is no extant organ music in the 17th century Bohemia, composed by the native composers. For this very reason I have decided to put down a few pieces based on Michna’s themes, in the manner he might have composed them, should he have wanted. However, I do not observe scrupulously the norms of the given style at all times. The kind listener may regard my ditties as an example, of how an erudite musician might have amused himself or herself, by reaching for inspiration into the rich past. Consequently, variations on Christmas Dew might have been composed by Sweelinck; the author of the fantasy on Wanting Him to Sleep might have been Froberger. Christmas Magnet and Archer is based on both, Michna and the Spanish composer José Elias. There have been diverse musical impulses for the title piece called Labyrinth of the Divine Love. Christmas Amiability uses a motive from an anonymous piece of English origin, My Lady. Although Posy or Myrrh Chain deviates from the style of the epoch and anticipates the remote future, I have fully implemented the fundamental principle of my collection also in this case, i.e. the harmonic and melodic structure of Michna’s pieces is respected, while the inspiration came from foreign sources. The partita Allegro of the Ascending Jesus Christ probably delights the admirers of Pachelbel. Influences of Scheidt might be traced in the piece called Human Fragility and Angelic Suavity, but its conclusion reaches into an even earlier period. At the first glance one might find it difficult to decode the echoes of Michna’s themes in Praeludium in C, composed in the style of Buxtehude and in Toccata in A, in the style of Muffat. In the latter, there are even the exact quotes of Muffat’s Toccata prima and a Pachelbel’s composition. The fantasy La, mi, re, reflects on an anonymous piece of music composed in the 16th century. A similar case is Death, End, Toll Bell, inspired by Frescobaldi’s compositions.

Jahrhundert. Kompositionen von Frescobaldi dienten als Vorlage für Tod – Ende – Glockenschlag.
