JAROSLAV TŮMA – organ by Jehmlich Dresden 1941

The Cathedral Hill in Litoměřice, where the Cathedral of St Stephen is situated, has been a centre of Christian liturgy in north Bohemia for almost a thousand years. We cannot imagine a Catholic Mass without the sounds of the royal instrument! The organ is an intricate organism, each of its components is irreplaceable and the majestic tones of the organ are the result of the co-operation between the single components. Likewise, the organ building is an artistic synthesis of many crafts. Thus the organ mirrors the role of the Church, where each believer fulfils his or her calling and so collectively worships the Lord. May this CD be a reminder of the beauty of Litoměřice Cathedral and at the same time an encouragement to do God’s work on Earth.

November 2009, Fr Stanislav Přibyl, General Vicar

The Cathedral of St Stephen in Litoměřice is not only an imposing edifice built from an inanimate matter, stone, but also a place in which generations of believers prayed to God and which is connected with human fates, among others, with the martyrdom of diocesan bishops. Among the bishops, the 16th Bishop of Litoměřice, Antonín Alois Weber, who was of German origin, has a special place. Thanks to him, the Cathedral has an important organ, commissioned by him from the organ workshop of Gebrüder Jehmlich, from near-by Dresden. (The organ workshop is called Jehmlich Orgelbau Dresden nowadays.) The owners of the workshop originally besieged the Bishop, to commission this large instrument from them, as to help their employees avoid military draft and the eventual involvement on the Eastern Front. The Bishop agreed. However, he was not in an enviable position. As a consequence of the break-up of Czechoslovakia under the Munich Agreement, the Reich annexed a part of his Diocese, and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia administered the other. The Nazi authorities prohibited him from carrying out pastoral visits in the Protectorate territory; he was persecuted for his affection for the Czech parishioners and for his anti-Nazi opinions. Following the war, he tried his best to contribute to the reconciliation and co-operation between the Czechs and Germans. Nevertheless, these efforts complicated his bishopric activities even more. Therefore he resigned in the autumn of 1946, and died shortly thereafter.
Following his consecration in Prague, Štěpán Maria Trochta became in 1947 the 17th Bishop of Litoměřice. During the previous war period he was imprisoned by the Nazis, having had the following remark in his documents: “return undesirable”. He survived the suffering, and the liberation came when he was in the concentration camp Dachau. However, Bishop Trochta who became later cardinal, was an eyesore for the new authorities. As he supported a more conciliatory way, leading to the coexistence of the Church and the communist regime, the Bishops’ Conference appointed him to preside over the negotiations with the communist representatives. Regrettably, it was soon obvious, that such efforts could not end successfully. In 1953 he was arrested, and a year later he was sentenced in a political trial to imprisonment for twenty-five years. Thanks to the amnesty he was released in 1960, but he could work as a bishop only from 1968 and yet for a short time, because the Church was hard hit during the years of the so-called normalisation. Cardinal Trochta died on April 6, 1974 after having suffered a grave stroke. It is said that the activity of the regional secretary for the Church installed by the communists, had precipitated the Cardinal’s death. According to the eye witnesses, the secretary carried out his oversight of the Church in the spirit of the infamous practices, used in the 1950s.
Litoměřice Cathedral is remarkable in many respects. Apart from the paintings by Karel Škréta and works by other famous artists, it boasts the above mentioned organ. During the years when the communists were in power, the thought of replacing the present organ with another one, was hardly conceivable. (It might have happened in another, more important church.) The reason for a new organ might have been the fact that the material used during the war was not of the best quality or that the electric action which has not been the latest fad for a number of years was out of date. The old good tracker action has been considered again for already decades, as substantially more appropriate and reliable. The electric action interconnecting the keyboards, the valves and the chest, was very successful in the late 19th century. It was developed in order to facilitate the rendition of the technically more demanding scores, emerging at that time. In comparison to the tracker action, the electric action is not so precise, because a certain delay is always between the actuation of a key and the opening of the valve in the chest. With regard to the movement of the fingers, the electric action is exact, comfortable and easily manageable. Therefore a more complex works composed in the romantic idiom, or conceived in our time, can be rendered with clarity and virtuosity. As far as the tone-colours and the intonation of the various stops are concerned, the organ of Litoměřice Cathedral is to be considered an important and well-maintained monument, indeed a unique one in Bohemia. The general renovation of the organ was done by the company Jehmlich Orgelbau Dresden in the year 2000.
The present organ has 53 sounding stops, distributed over four manuals and a pedal. It is placed in a case, remaining of the instrument built by Anton Reiss in the Pauline Church of St Salvator in the Old Town of Prague. Its prospect has a rich sculptural decoration, characteristic of the baroque style. The Reiss organ was originally shipped to Litoměřice on the rivers Vltava (Moldau) and Labe (Elbe), in two boats. It was installed in the Cathedral by Anton Rusch in 1787, and rebuilt several times.
The first composition recorded on this CD is Middelschulte’s transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Chaconne for Solo Violin from Partita No. 2. It is transcribed in the late Romantic virtuoso style, and was published by Breitkopf in Leipzig in 1912. Wilhelm Middelschulte (1863 – 1943) was a famous German organist, Bach scholar and a reputable teacher. He was born in Rhineland-Palatine, and in 1891 left for the USA where he made a brilliant concert and pedagogical career. In the USA he gave concerts playing the most prestigious instruments, and taught in several universities. He also toured Europe. In Chicago he met Ferrrucio Busoni (1866 – 1924), the phenomenal pianist of the time, who was also famous for his virtuous piano transcriptions of Bach’s compositions for organ. It is no wonder that they understood each other, and dedicated compositions to one another: Middelschulte dedicated his transcription of Bach’s Chaconne to Busoni, who also successfully transcribed it for his instrument, the piano. In both instances the original violin part is elaborated on by the addition of contrapuntal lines, related with a few exceptions to the baroque textures. Whereas Busoni’s setting emulates the style of Ferenc Liszt, Middelschulte’s transcription for the organ veers toward the late romantic harmonic sphere of Max Reger.
Franz Schmidt (1874 – 1939) was born in a German-speaking family in Bratislava (in today’s Slovakia). He is considered a rival of Reger and one of the most significant Austrian composers in the period between the two World Wars. From 1888 onwards he lived in Vienna, and wrote a number of vocal and instrumental pieces, including two operas, four symphonies and a variety of other symphonic, chamber and organ compositions. His Toccata in C major was composed in 1924.
There are certainly more appropriate instruments for the music of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy in the Czech lands, sounding more authentically than the organ in Litoměřice Cathedral. However, the Cathedral organ represents a certain aesthetic synthesis of the late Romanticism and of the “Orgelbewegung” movement, with richly represented mutations stops that are a typical trait of the baroque period. This recording of Mendelssohn’s composition should remind us, that he succeeded in nearly prophetic way, in combining the baroque polyphony with the expression and at times almost pandering sentimentality of the 19th century. He showed so the direction of a possible development, and became for quite some time an example for his successors in Germany and England.
Marco Enrico Bossi (1861 – 1925) became famous as a concert organist and improviser. He was in contact with the most reputable organists of his time, among others with César Franck and Marcel Dupré. In the autumn of 1924 he unexpectedly died, while returning from his concert voyage in the USA. He composed numerous pieces for organ, including a concert for organ and orchestra. Theme and Variations in C sharp minor is one of his most performed compositions.
Fidelio Friedrich Finke (1891 – 1968) was of German origin, born in the Sudetenland, in Josefův Důl in Jizerské hory, in Bohemia. During his life he experienced the post-war events: he was repatriated via Moscow to Dresden, but after the Second World War he was one of the most significant personalities in the cultural life in the German Democratic Republic. After the First World War he was very active not only as a teacher but also as a composer. He became professor at Prague Conservatory and later, at the German Academy for Music and Art in Prague (Deutsche Akademie für Musik und darstellende Künste). For his compositions he received Czechoslovak State Awards in 1928 and 1937. Unfortunately, nowadays he is practically unknown in Bohemia. He composed about 170 pieces of music. The chorale preludes show sophisticated polyphonic structure carried by a thoroughly contemporary language. In his composing he considered the works of Bach and German Romantics to be great examples and a lasting inspiration.
What are you carrying in your jar? I am bringing a small treat, I got for carolling, but I fell on ice!). With these words a ditty for children begins. The improvisation that concludes this organ portrait of St Stephen Cathedral in Litoměřice is based on this simple tune. The relatively simplistic tune is developed into surprising proportions, and receives a new context. The situation of an improvisator is not dissimilar to the task of the builders who construct an edifice from single stones. Likewise, the musician knows the single stones of his profession: the intervals, chords, rhythms etc. The improvised whole consists of many elements combined. As far as an improvisation “on a given theme” is concerned, the “outer” ideas are principally even more important than the richness of the theme itself. As it is customarily the case, I was given the theme by Fr Stanislav Přibyl a few moments before the actual improvisation. Litoměřice Cathedral stands in its place from 1677, immobile and seemingly forever, whereas the improvisation, taking place in the passage of time, would disappear if not kept in a “can”, i.e. recorded. Thus, it would not be any more possible to hear it in the same version, because the organist-improvisator would not be able to remember his improvisation in detail.

„Koleda, koleda, Štěpáne, co to neseš ve džbáně?
Was trägst du da im Krug?

In seguito all’amnistia fu scarcerato nel 1960.
Nell’autunno 1924 andò in tournée a New York e Philadelphia.
Fu spostato prima a Mosca e poi a Dresda. In Boemia è oggi assolutamente dimenticato.
“Koleda, koleda, Štěpáne, co to neseš ve džbáně?
