THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TOWN CHURCH dedicated to St. Bartholomew began shortly after King Přemysl Otakar II made Kolín a royal town in 1253. After the fire of the town in 1349, the builder Petr Parléř, undertook the restoration of the church; the three-aisle architecture based on Turinese and North French models was completed at the end of the 14th century. The interior of the sanctuary was gradually furnished with costly and artistically valuable furnishings thanks to the generosity of the townspeople of Kolín. This included a new organ, built in 1395 by Master Pavel.

Towards the end of the Thirty Years' War, a new two-manual organ with 17 stops was installed on the church gallery. This Renaissance instrument served until 1761, when it was replaced by a two-manual instrument with 16 stops from the workshop of the organ builder Pavel František Horák from Kutná Hora. At the beginning of the 19th century master Horák substantially rebuilt and enlarged the organ. The instrument with three manuals and 35 stops was one of the largest in Bohemia and rightly became an ornament of the church and the pride of the Kolín community.
During the 19th century the instrument underwent only minor changes, which did not alter its baroque character. In the last quarter of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, St. Bartholomew's church was extensively restored. At the end of the purist reconstruction carried out by the architect Josef Mocker, a large modern three-manual organ made by the organ builder Anton Mölzer from Kutná Hora was installed in 1910. The pneumatic instrument in the German Romantic style with three manuals and 36 stops was equipped with numerous couplers and other additional devices and was fitted into two symmetrical wings of carved and richly decorated Art Nouveau organ cases.
Numerous constructional defects and considerable deterioration of the otherwise acoustically excellent Mölzer's instrument were the cause of the radical reconstruction carried out in 1973-1975 by the organ-builder company Organa Kutná Hora. The pneumatic instrument with cone chests had a total of 30 stops on two manuals and a so-called “universal” style.
The unsatisfactory sound and the inadequate technical condition of the instrument made the owner - around the year 2016 - consider constructing a new organ, which was supposed to restore the once exceptional sound of the instrument in the church in Kolín.
Following the inspiring architecture of the Gothic church, the concept of a French symphonic instrument was chosen, drawing as faithfully as possible on the legacy of the famous organist Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The organ workshops of Dlabal-Mettler and Kánský-Brachtl, together with the organ builder Helmuth Gripentrog, undertook the challenging task. Between 2021 and 2023, they built into the restored organ case a three-manual instrument with slider chests and a total of 47 stops and 2,833 pipes. The mechanical action is equipped with Barker lever on the G.O. and Récit m, and the console is equipped with a “Setzer” memory device.
The final voicing of the organ was completed in the spring of 2024 and the instrument was blessed at a festive service on 26 May 2024 by Mons. Jan Baxant, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Litoměřice and the Parish Priest of Kolín between 1997 and 2000.
