The cycle was inspired by the Jan Křtitel Vaňhal (1739–1813) competition held in Opočno. The pieces are intended to be performed on organs of all sizes, on harpsichord, or on clavichord, though preferably on single-manual organs with a short octave and a compass up to c³. Performance on instruments tuned in historical temperaments, including meantone, is recommended. Pedal use is optional (ad libitum), including pedals with a sounding compass of twelve or eighteen notes.
The individual pieces may be performed separately, or paired with the original fugues by Vaňhal, or compiled into any selection. Each set of six pieces forms a suite; if the entire suite or both suites are performed, it is advisable to follow the given order.
